The Story of Stuff
I found a great, informative video that I wanted to share. Just click on the picture below.
p.s. Breastfeeding is still best (this makes more sense after you watch the video)!

I feel better now that I can admit it.
The atmosphere around my house has been cRaZy the last few weeks. One bad case of the flu, two weekend trips, the end of a hockey era, and quite a few nursing covers later I finally have a free moment.
My poor blog is always the first thing to get throw to the wayside. I will try to do better, I promise.

Another excellent reason to promote breastfeeding! The following excerpts are from a new article from Science Alert.
“The Perth scientist who made the world-first discovery that human breast milk contains stem cells is confident that within five years scientists will be harvesting them to research treatment for conditions as far-reaching as spinal injuries, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.”
“It is setting the baby up for the perfect development,” he says. “We already know that babies who are breast fed have an IQ advantage and that there’s a raft of other health benefits. Researchers also believe that the protective effects of being breast fed continue well into adult life.
“The point is that many mothers see milks as identical – formula milk and breast milk look the same so they must be the same. But we know now that they are quite different and a lot of the effects of breast milk versus formula don’t become apparent for decades. Formula companies have focussed on matching breast milk’s nutritional qualities but formula can never provide the developmental guidance.”
Breastmilk is AMAZING stuff!

Today I stumbled…
upon two sites that I just have to share.
www.hippielovechild.com and www.littleearthangels.com
Sometimes I find things that truly speak to me and these do. As I’m browsing I have to keep chanting to myself, “must save money, must save money… can’t buy stuff….yet.” Since I can’t support this mom financially, which I would love to do by buying all her tees, I have to give her a shout out.
Go now and see what I’m talking about!

If you have a little princess and she loves dresses, you have to check out Dressing West! Dressing West has been selling homemade pillowcase style dresses on Hyena Cart since July 2007. They are…simply adorable!
The thing I really love about these dresses are their versatility. Casual in the summer with flip flops! Dressy with tights and a shrug for winter. Once the dress is “outgrown” it can be worn as a top. Pair it over jeans for a chic, boho look. Oh, the possibilities are endless. Can’t you just see a little 6 month cherub in one of these dresses!
Dressing West offers dresses in size 6 months to 5t. You can find some of these gorgeous little numbers by clicking the logo below.
Dressing West also stocks on the new Take off your Shoes congo. Check them out as well at: T.O.Y.S.

I have to start my spotlight by saying that I have secretly been longing for a Cute2Carry handbag since I first came across this Hyena Cart! Here is a picture of a custom nappy bag and a messanger bag done by Tracey, the WAHM behind Cute2Carry.
Cute 2 Carry specializes in handbags, diaper bags, and matching accessories. For knitters, Cute 2 Carry makes a must have knitting tote with all the essentials. This knitting tote came equipped with knitting needle slots, a yarn ball pouch with a grommet yarn feeder, and an additional pocket for circular needles or your keys, wallet or sunglasses!
Tracey says that she had dabbled in a variety of artistic areas throughout the years. She even recovered a sofa just to see if she could! I always find myself looking at her site, just to see what she has come up with. From her designs and the enthusiasm she exudes throughout her site, it’s plain to see that she loves what she does.
Cute2Carry handbags are gorgeous, but don’t take my word for it. Visit Cute2Carry’s website yourself at: www.cute2carry.com
Cute2Carry also stocks at the Lily Pad Landing Congo on Hyena Cart. In addition, you can check out Cute2Carry’s awesome feedback by clicking here: Feedback

I’m a little behind, but here’s to a year filled with good times, family, friends, and lots of happiness! I always see January as a fresh start and this year I have some big goals for Blue Lake Baby. Our website should be up and running this month, new projects keep popping into my head, and I have made a resolution to really get down to business promoting attachment parenting!
As part of my plan for 2008, I will be featuring two weekly posts on my blog: a Hyena Cart Spotlight and an Attachment Parenting feature! The Hyena Spotlight will showcase some of the extremely talented WAHM’s I’ve met on Hyena Cart and provide info. on their products! The AP posts will feature information on different aspects of attachment parenting, while satisfying my love for all things crunchy!!! I’m excited about these and hope you find them of interest!

Lately I’ve been troubled by the irresponsibility of toy manufacturers. This morning I woke up to these excerpts on Yahoo News:
“Tests on more than 1,200 children’s products, most of them still on store shelves, found that 35 percent contain lead — many with levels far above the federal recall standard used for lead paint.”
“Mattel Inc. recalled more than 21 million Chinese-made toys on fears they were tainted with lead paint and tiny magnets that children could accidentally swallow. Mattel’s own tests on the toys found that they had lead levels up to 200 times the accepted limit.
The Consumer Action Guide to Toxic Chemicals in Toys, which is available to the public at http://www.healthytoys.org, shows how the commonly purchased children’s products rank in terms of containing lead, cadmium, arsenic and other harmful chemicals. It comes in time for holiday shopping — and amid the slew of recalls.”
“The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a level of 40 ppm of lead as the maximum that should be allowed in children’s products. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible learning disabilities and behavioral problems and, at very high levels, seizures, coma, and even death.”
Ughh! This is so discouraging, especially around the holidays when parents flock to the stores for something special for their little ones. It only reaffirms my belief that I can’t rely on the government to know what’s best for my daughter (not for toy regulation, vaccines, healthy food, and on and on).
I’m going to challenge everyone out there to be proactive with me! Let’s think. Do research. Challenge what lawmakers say is okay for us. Our little ones deserve it!
And that is the end of my rant. Sorry! Here is one idea that I am going to do this holiday season: take the pledge to buy handmade (or make gifts of your own). Check out this link and take the pledge yourself.
